The House Public Education Committee held its first interim hearing of the year this week. Lawmakers focused on the second of the committee's seven interim charges, the state of education, as well as one of the five bills the committee has been tasked with monitoring the implementation of, House Bill (HB) 1481 by Rep. Caroline Fairly (R–Amarillo), the law restricting student cell phone use in schools. This was the first of multiple hearings tied to the interim charges from House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R–Lubbock).
