Over 65,000 children in Texas could lose access to child care under a White House proposal to eliminate federal funding for the Head Start program, according to early childhood education advocates. The proposed budget cut also would disrupt work and educational opportunities for over 50,000 Texas parents who rely on Head Start, advocates say. It would also eliminate the 19,000 childcare jobs across the state's 1,200-plus Head Start programs. However, some conservative groups say Head Start has been plagued by financial waste and abuse.
