President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order increasing the $215 cost for a new H-1B visa to $100,000. Large tech and finance firms with sizable budgets dominate the H-1B process, but the six-figure fee is double the average teacher salary in Texas. The hiked-up cost could leave several school districts figuring out how to attract and retain new teachers. "This order from the federal level wasn't really aimed specifically at schools. It's much broader than that. And so there's some question about whether or not there was even a contemplation that this was going to be a consequence of the order," said Monty Exter, the director of government relations for the Association of Texas Professional Educators.
