Texas lawmakers are looking to provide educators with more power in the classroom to maintain discipline and promote a safer learning environment. House Bill 6, introduced by Representative Jeff Leach, would change how students are suspended, expelled, or placed in alternative education programs. Nearly half of educators cited in a poll in the state's 2023 Teacher Vacancy Task Force report said discipline and a safe work environment were a top concern. "There are also more instances of kids who are committing more serious infractions, who maybe aren't safe around the educator or around other kids. We definitely need more tools to be able to deal with those situations," said Monty Exter, Director of Governmental Relations at the Association of Texas Professional Educators.
