Lamar Consolidated ISD, a fast-growing school district southwest of Houston, has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a security screening system that uses artificial intelligence. District police chief Henry Garcia said the weapons detection system, which first was used at graduation events in May and has since been deployed at sporting events and on some campuses, was not implemented in response to gun-related incidents in the district. Rather, he said, it's designed to act as a deterrent, assist the district's police officers and ease community concerns about school shootings.
