A federal judge has temporarily blocked the implementation of Texas' new "Ten Commandments" law in 11 school districts, but Senate Bill 10 is still set to go into effect for the rest of the state starting Sept. 1-unless further legal action delays it.
In our latest atpenews.org blog, ATPE Staff Attorney Jeff Kelly outlines what the law requires, what districts may need to do, and what this means for educators. While the law mandates districts to display donated posters of the Ten Commandments in classrooms, it doesn't place direct responsibilities on individual educators. That said, the presence of these displays may prompt questions from students and parents, and educators should know how to respond.
Has your district provided any guidance yet about SB 10?
