Hi everyone,
I'm excited to share my latest feature story for ATPE News, titled "Bringing Learning to Life: How Puppets and Masks Empower Students and Spark Engagement." In this piece, I explore how two inspiring Texas educators-Katy Matthews from Plano ISD and Cassandra Rogers from North Lamar ISD-are transforming their classrooms with tools that are anything but ordinary.
Whether it's a finger puppet guiding students through social-emotional lessons or a handmade mask opening the door to meaningful conversations about identity and emotion, these educators are using creative play not just to teach, but to connect.
As Katy Matthews explains: "They don't even realize they're learning because they're having fun."
In classrooms where joy, empathy, and self-expression sometimes feel like rare commodities, puppets and masks are making space for deeper learning and real growth.
"They give students a voice, a shield, and a stage to express who they are," Rogers says. "And sometimes, that's exactly what a young person needs to feel like they belong."
Have you ever used creative tools such as puppets, masks, or dramatic play in your classroom? What impact did it have on student engagement or connection?
Looking forward to hearing your stories and strategies!
